Postgraduate Training in the Management of Learning Disabilities

Prospectus

Introduction

Children’s scholastic achievement is a serious concern for many parents, teachers, psychologists, and other professionals. Learning disabilities involve the inappropriate development of academic skills, such as reading, writing, and arithmetic, due to an insufficient cognitive process, usually occurring at a very young age in a child’s life and continuing into adulthood with several manifestations, including an inflexible personality and sociopathy. So, the greater understanding of the developmental and learning disabilities of all concerned will facilitate effective intervention and remediation. This postgraduate training program in management of learning disabilities aims to create practical awareness and skills for teaching children with learning disability. This will be highly beneficial to all interested candidates with an undergraduate degree in any subject, as well as those who are willing to contribute to the education and rehabilitation of individuals with learning disabilities.

Program Outcome

  2. The student will be able to identify, screen, and assess children with learning disability and assess their academics.
  3. They will be able to manage the children with learning disabilities theoretically and practically.
  4. Understanding the importance of rehabilitating individuals with learning disabilities and developing skills for educational rehabilitation.

Topics Covered

Module I

An introduction to disabilities and special education covers topics such as various disabilities that hinder the development of scholastic skills. The classroom instructional hours primarily focus on different kinds of physical and psychological disabilities. Students are expected to have a greater knowledge and understanding of the multiple disabilities seen among students and their role in the scholastic achievement of children. The field observations, which involve institutions that care for individuals with disabilities, provide hands-on exposure to familiarise oneself with disabilities.

Module II

Identification and assessment of students with learning disabilities. This section addresses systematic approaches to screening, identifying, and assessing learning disabilities and learning difficulties. Students learn the concepts of learning disability screening, identification, assessment, measurement, and evaluation of students with learning disabilities. They will be able to effectively use the tools and techniques for assessing children with learning disabilities. They will have skills in diagnosing the educational problems of children with learning disabilities. The ability to develop/construct assessment tools, as well as prepare a report of assessment findings, is also expected from the learner.

Module III

Management techniques for learning disabilities. Teaching and learning strategies specific to children with learning problems. Basics of curriculum development specific to children with learning disabilities will be the core of the module. Fundamental concepts and principles of curriculum development, effective use of appropriate teaching strategies suitable for the learning level of the student, and facilitating the improvement of cognitive and processing abilities. Teaching curricular areas using remedial techniques is also addressed in the module.

Module IV

Principles of rehabilitation. Educational rehabilitation strategies for children with learning disabilities are a complex task which involves several interconnected factors for achieving effective rehabilitation of learning disabled people. Identifying unique cognitive abilities and deficiencies and tailoring a rehabilitation program is the task of rehabilitating individuals with learning disabilities. Educational and vocational rehabilitation concerns are included in the module.

Each module comprises numerous tasks that necessitate practical training. Institutional visits, observations of students with disabilities in the school setting, and other training areas will be arranged.

 

Medium of instruction

The medium of instruction shall be English, classroom activities shall be flexible to suit the learners’ learning achievements, and the teaching method shall be a hybrid mode (combining offline and online components). Hands-on training will be arranged at the learner’s convenience and according to their requirements.

Evaluation & Examination

There shall be continuous internal evaluation, as well as a course-end examination, for both theory and practical modules. Continuous internal evaluation accounts for 40% of the assessment, encompassing students’ engagement in class attendance, assignments, seminars, and internal examinations. The course end examination accounts for 60% of the marks. A score of 60 per cent is considered a pass.

Duration of the program

Classes will be every Saturday for about 10 months.

Who are the learners?

This program is open to all those interested (parents of children with learning disabilities, teachers, special educators, working with children with academic problems, etc.) in understanding, identifying, and managing learning disabilities. Candidates who have passed graduation in any subject are eligible for admission to the postgraduate training certificate program in management of learning disabilities.
